Omega Chapters: Akimi

Updated: Apr 21

Omega Chapters is a new Blog series from your Alum sisters at Sigma Psi Sigma. Welcome to the inaugural edition! Each month we'll celebrate WSU AXOs who are at a transition point in their life, have faced a challenge, created a win, or just got out of bed on a difficult day. No toxic positivity allowed and no humble brags. The goal is to connect and inspire.

First Year Out of College by Akimi Nagano

As a year post grad approaches there is a lot to reflect on.

This year has felt like I have lived multiple lives, but also feels like it's been only a few seconds since graduating college.

In the past year, I've moved twice and moved to places I’ve never lived before. I was fortunate enough to get a job after graduation, but after my second move I was faced with looking for another job. And I had to decide what I wanted to do next. There were many days I felt lost, and I learned that’s okay.

New City; New Lives

It can be hard to move to a new city especially when you may not know many people, but I’ve found comfort in staying in touch with my roommates, friends, and sisters from Alpha Chi Omega. We’ve been able to get a routine down to have a few visits to see each other. It’s been so fun getting to visit their new post grad cities, and seeing the lives they are forming.

And although it can be very scary moving somewhere new, don’t be afraid to step outside of your comfort zone. Nothing is permanent, and that can be scary, but also find a breath of fresh air in knowing you don’t have to stay where you are at forever.

To me post grad has been nerve wracking, stressful, and scary at times. More than that though, I’ve been able to do a lot of soul searching and self exploration and learn so much about myself and the world. I am loving this season of life, and truly grateful for where I’m at now.

The Myth of Passions

We are so young!!! It’s okay to not have it all figured out. It’s okay to get a job, and know it’s not the right fit. I think what I’ve learned is your career doesn’t need to be your passions. Fuel your passions, hobbies, and likes outside of your job. Give yourself something to look forward to after you get off or on your weekends.

Being Present

I look back at my college years with such fondness, but I’m also experiencing so much joy in the present, and hope for the future.

If you are about to graduate, and you are scared. That’s okay!! You’re not alone, and you have so many people to support you or to reach out to ready to help!

It’s okay to not know what you want to do or to not have it all figured out. Everything will unfold in the right time. Don’t be afraid for rejection. The right things will not miss you!

Soak up these last moments, and enjoy every second. Know though that good things will come after graduation, and life will continue to go on.If you find yourself in the Bay Area don’t be afraid to reach out!!

Love, Akimi Nagano
